British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), (an animal rescue charity that is dedicated to the well being of all marine animals around the UK be they whales, dolphins, porpoises, turtles, basking sharks, sea birds and even the odd sunfish) are looking to train more volunteers to assist in the rescue and refloatation of our marine mammals and also provide info for you to help in the rescue of marine turtles and oiled birds when necessary. training is being held at the Coastguard Station in Stornoway on Saturday 4th February. get in touch for more information.

Chest Heart and Stroke are looking for volunteer befrienders In the sornoway and surrounding areas. Activities might include going out shopping, taking the client out for some short exercise, for a cup of tea, or to just visit them at home.

NSPCC
are looking for volunteers for their Child Line Schools Service. Volunteers for the CLSS will have an opportunity to work in pairs and go into schools to educate children about all forms of abuse, how to protect themselves and possible sources of help and support. Samaritans are looking for listening volunteers to man their phones, each volunteer carries out about 12 hours a month on a rota. Full training will be given.

Uist & Barra Sports Council
  are looking for a Treasurer and Chairperson. These positions are vacant and we hope to fill them at the AGM which will be held on Friday 28th October at 7.30pm in Liniclate School. The Isle of Lewis Branch of Cats Protection (also covers Harris) needs volunteers to help with the following tasks:-

Fosterers - To look after cats in a dedicated room or in a pen (provided by CP) in their garden
Transport volunteers - To take cats to the vets, drive other volunteers etc
Recruitment volunteer- To recruit new volunteers to help cats in the area
Publicity volunteer- to raise the branch profile
Fundraisers- to organise and attend events which will raise money to help Cats Protection
Assistant coordinator- to help with the running of and administration within the Branch
Webmaster- to run the branch website

All training will be provided and reasonable expenses paid.

Beaver Scout Leaders Needed in Ness and Scout Leaders needed in Tarbert! Due to enthusiastic interest in scouting in the islands there are now opportunities for Scout Leaders in both Ness and Tarbert. Beaver Scouts are aged 6 - 8 years old and the Ness group needs two enthusiastic individuals to participate in a host of activities with the troop. Scout Leaders need no specific skills, except lots of enthusiasm, wanting to work with a uniformed organisation and liking children and young people. Training given. Leaders must be over 18.

Action for children need volunteers for a variety of fundraising roles, leaflet distributors and school speakers.

Western Isles Rape Crisis require board members to support their work.

NHS Western Isles  are seeking to recruit a number of volunteer Lay Representatives to sit on a number of strategic committees and planning groups to ensure that the patients experience is heard and is able to influence the improvement agenda and service redesign.

Phab Club require volunteers to help with the running of the club.

Bridge Centre are recruiting mentors for their new project. mentors will be matched to a young person with similar interests, no experience necessary as training will be provided just an interest in young people.

Western Isles Scout Association are looking for new leaders in each area of Lewis. Leaders participate in a whole host of activities for Scout Troops (boys & girls aged 6-25) No specific skills are required except for lots of enthusiasm, wanting to work within a uniformed organisation and liking children and young people.

Advocacy Western Isles seeks advocacy workers to represent the interests of and speak on behalf of vulnerable people in the Western Isles who need support to make their views and wishes known to others. Full training will be provided.

Active schools would like to hear from anyone with an interest in sports and health to assist with the running of a variety of after school sports clubs. Training will be provided, no experience necessary.

Paths to Health require volunteer walk leaders. Full training in leading walks will be provided. Walks usually last about half an hour and are at a relaxed pace.

The Monday Stroke Club at Grianan require volunteers for their morning session.The Monday Stroke club is a social group  and volunteers are needed to attend the social meetings and help the members participate fully in the groups activities such as, dominoes and bingo.

Duke of Edinburgh Award need volunteer leaders to help support young people through their award.

Stornoway Lifeboat Guild are looking for volunteers to help with their Flag Week which is the week starting Monday 20th July. For more information contact our Stornoway office.

Counselling and family mediation require a contact centre worker. The contact centre is a neutral venue in which a parent who no longer lives with their child is enabled to spend time with them in an informal atmosphere.The volunteer will assist in making the time spent between parent and child as relaxed as possible.

Blytheswood shop in Stornoway requires a volunteer assistant to help sort out the donations.

An Sulaire Trust are looking for volunteers who would like to know more about traditional wooden boats, especially the dipping lug sailing boats of the Lewis tradition? An Sulaire Trust offers a unique chance to get hands on experience whatever your level of knowledge. Work happens in Stornoway on a Saturday during winter. This is often in a covered area, but on occasion might be outside working. No experience necessary - just a willingness to learn.
