The Western Isles or Outer Hebrides, (officially known for local government purposes by the Gaelic name, Na h-Eileanan Siar) comprise an island chain off the north west coast of Scotland.
The island chain forms part of the Hebrides, separated from the Scottish mainland and from the Inner Hebrides by the stormy waters of the Minch, the Little Minch and the Sea of the Hebrides.
The Scottish Household survey 2005 showed that 29% of those surveyed volunteered in the last 12 months, this is 4% higher than the Scottish average from the same survey. It is expected that this figure would be higher if all those volunteering recognised it as volunteering. The islands have a high level of community involvement, which in some cases is well above the national average.
